DGNB Certification
The German certification system DGNB (Deutsches Gütesiegel nachhaltiges Bauen= German Quality Seal for Sustainable Construction) has been established by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Nachhaltiges Bauen e. V. to provide a measure for the sustainability of buildings.
Points are awarded in the following six environmental categories; however, location quality is not included in the overall assessment:
- Ecological quality
- Economical quality
- Socio-cultural and functional quality
- Technical quality
- Process quality
- Location quality
Different usage profiles allow the certification of new and existing buildings and districts in Germany. The usage profiles include:
- Office and administration buildings
- Trade buildings
- Industrial buildings
- Residential buildings
- Small residential buildings
- Hotel buildings
- Educational buildings
- Healthcare buildings
- Laboratory buildings
- Mixed use
- Urban districts
- Office and administration districts

Depending on the level of performance, the buildings are awarded with the quality seal in silver (50%), gold (65%) or platinum (80%) (before it was bronze, silver, gold). A building can also receive the “DGNB Diamant” award for outstanding architecture and design quality.
