ESG verification for the EU taxonomy for the real estate sector with DGNB
ESG factors are becoming more and more important in the real estate sector, especially since the EU published specific criteria for sustainable economic activities as part of the EU taxonomy. Six overarching environmental goals were set in order to make sustainability definable in this area. The European Commission is currently defining goals for the areas of social and governance. The DGNB now offers its own ESG verification for the real estate sector in order to confirm compliance with the criteria set out in the EU taxonomy. Construction projects, existing buildings and entire portfolios in the areas of new construction, renovation, as well as acquisition and ownership can be verified as taxonomy-compliant. For precisely these areas, specific sustainability criteria have been defined in the taxonomy, and DGNB’s ESG verification is also based on these criteria. In fact, many of the points contained in the EU taxonomy are also part of the DGNB certification. Especially if the taxonomy verification takes place after or at the same time as the DGNB certification, there is only very little effort in terms of providing evidence for the individual criteria, since the DGNB certification documentation already provides a large part of the required data. With the verification, the DGNB provides proof of the taxonomy conformity of the project, as well as a detailed report and specific recommendations for improvement. The service is available across Europe. The verification can take place with a general DGNB certification, but can also be carried out independently. In the long term, the ESG verification will become an integral part of the DGNB system and the taxonomy check will be carried out with every DGNB certification.
