The Assessment System for Sustainable Building (BNB) is a central tool for planning and assessing sustainable building projects in the public sector. It supplements the Sustainable Building Guidelines of the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Building (BMWSB) and enables a comprehensive assessment of federal buildings and their surroundings. The system was developed in collaboration with the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) in order to evaluate and optimize sustainable construction projects according to uniform criteria. The consultation and compilation of the documents required for the assessment is carried out exclusively by trained BNB sustainability coordinators.
Holistic assessment for sustainable federal buildings
Sustainable construction in the public sector is particularly important because the state thus assumes a responsible, future-oriented role model for private construction projects.
The Assessment System for Sustainable Building ensures that sustainable, economical and future-proof buildings are created in public construction. It ensures that taxpayers’ money is used efficiently by taking ecological, economic and social aspects into account. It also helps the state to achieve its climate protection and sustainability goals. As the entire life cycle is considered, costs are reduced and quality is increased in the long term.

The system also enables a consistent assessment in various life cycle phases.

- Coordination and optimization of planning
- Interim assessments during the planning phase
