The Assessment System for Sustainable Building (BNB) is a central tool for planning and assessing sustainable building projects, particularly in the public sector. It supplements the Sustainable Building Guidelines of the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Building (BMWSB) and enables a comprehensive assessment of federal buildings and their surroundings. The system was developed in cooperation with the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) in order to evaluate and optimize sustainable construction projects according to uniform criteria.
Holistic assessment for sustainable buildings
The BNB considers the entire life cycle of a building and assesses it on the basis of various criteria:
- Ecological quality: environmental compatibility and resource conservation
- Economic quality: life cycle costs and economic efficiency
- Socio-cultural quality: user comfort, health and cultural aspects
- Technical quality: Functionality and technical design
- Process quality: planning and construction processes
- Site characteristics: Special site characteristics
This holistic approach ensures that sustainable construction takes into account not only ecological, but also economic and social aspects.
HOINKA as your BNB sustainability coordinator:
- Advice on sustainable building planning in accordance with BNB standards
- Coordination and monitoring of the certification process
- Support in defining targets and optimizing sustainability measures
- Compilation and review of the required verification documents
- Accompanying documentation during planning and construction
- Ensuring quality assurance for successful certification
Application of the BNB system
Originally developed for federal buildings, the BNB can also be used for construction projects at state and municipal level as well as for the private sector. There are different system variants for building types such as office and administration buildings, educational buildings and laboratory buildings. In addition, the system enables a consistent assessment in various life cycle phases – from new construction and modernization to use and operation.
For construction projects that cannot be assigned to an existing BNB system variant, there is the option of “analogous BNB application”. In this case, the criteria are individually checked and adapted in order to still meet the sustainability targets.
Certification process with BNB
The certification process comprises several steps:
- Definition of sustainability goals based on the BNB criteria
- Coordination and optimization of planning
- Interim assessments during the planning phase
- Accompanying documentation during planning and construction
- Verification by a conformity assessment body
- Award of the BNB certificate
