Sustainability is no longer just a trend, but a mandatory program, as the effects of climate change cannot be denied. In order to be prepared for the future, it is important to set sustainability targets at an early stage.
One way to guide the development of a sustainability strategy is to focus on the ESG criteria. ESG stands for Environment, Social and Governance and describes sustainability-related areas of responsibility and values. In the construction industry, for example, integrating these factors into building planning creates a holistic approach to sustainability that benefits tenants and users and makes projects more attractive to investors.
Against the backdrop of the climate crisis, the EU action plan for sustainable finance now also aims to steer investments in the direction of sustainable capital investments. Incentives are to be created to channel funds into necessary sustainable investments that have a positive impact on the climate. In order to prevent buzzwords such as sustainability being used only to attract investors without any commitment to greater sustainability and climate protection, criteria for sustainable and ecological investments were defined as part of the EU Taxonomy Regulation. This allows sustainable investments to be clearly identified.
The Disclosure Regulation , which is also part of the action plan, obliges companies in the financial sector to disclose strategies and information on how they deal with sustainability issues. For example, real estate funds can also be classified as sustainable or non-sustainable. Read more about the Disclosure Regulation and the EU Taxonomy at ESG factors.
The criteria defined in the taxonomy are also partially reflected in the ESG aspects. ESG ratings objectively assess a company’s commitment in the above-mentioned sustainability-related areas of responsibility. These ratings allow ESG performance to be categorized, highlight potential for improvement and help to create greater transparency in terms of sustainability. Compliance with ESG criteria can be certified via various systems and specialized providers.
