The energy audit is an important tool for determining the current energy consumption of buildings and defining measures to increase energy efficiency and reduce energy costs. Energy consulting, thermal building physics, energy audits are essential components in this process. Large companies are obliged to carry out regular energy audits in accordance with §§ 8 – 8d EDL-G (Energy Services and Other Energy Efficiency Measures Act). However, it is also worthwhile for medium-sized and small companies to have their energy saving potential checked. By integrating energy management systems, a company’s energy consumption is permanently monitored and energy efficiency is increased in the long term. Additionally, BEG/KFW funding opportunities can support these initiatives.
Carrying out an energy audit
The implementation is based on the requirements of DIN EN 16247-1: First, the energy data of all consuming or generating systems, processes and facilities are considered. These are then evaluated on the basis of energy performance indicators. Potential savings are identified during an on-site visit and inspection. This is followed by the preparation of a report with an analysis of energy consumption, measures to increase energy efficiency and a profitability calculation of possible savings measures. This is followed by the preparation of the energy report in accordance with DIN EN 16247-1. Once the initial audit has been completed, a further energy audit must be carried out every four years. The energy audit must be carried out by a qualified and accredited auditor. Companies that have already implemented an energy management system in accordance with DIN EN ISO 50001 are exempt from this obligation.
Long-term savings through energy management systems
An effective energy management system is needed to permanently integrate the measures decided in the energy audit into the company structure. An energy management system monitors energy consumption, detects overloads and incorrect settings and identifies faults at an early stage. This enables prompt countermeasures to be taken. An energy management system can optimize a company’s entire energy infrastructure. It also helps companies to take a further step towards sustainability. Efficient energy management and the resulting long-term energy optimization lead to long-term cost savings without reducing the productivity of your company.
