The Guiding Principles Compliance Certification

What is GPC?

Guiding Principles Compliance is a program of the Green Building Initiative (GBI). It is the first independent assessment program specifically designed to verify and certify compliance with the U.S. federal agencies’ guiding principles for greater sustainability in federal buildings. As part of the Guiding Principles Compliance certification, compliance with all legal provisions is verified in accordance with the Implementing Instructions for Executive Order 13834 Efficient Federal Operations for Sustainable New Construction and Modernization (GPC New Construction). A separate set of criteria, developed by GBI together with the US Department of Defense, certifies compliance with the Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC) 1-200-02 High Performance and Sustainable Building Requirements, which is considered to be compliant with the above regulations (GPC Department of Defense New Construction). With each new Executive Order published by the American authorities, the GBI updates the certification systems and thus provides an up-to-date certification and orientation tool.

Who is GPC certification for?

The GPC DOD NC certification can be applied not only to federal buildings in North America, but also to international locations such as air bases or the associated settlements for US military personnel and their dependents. The goal of the certification tool is to make sustainability compliance verification as easy as possible for buildings operated or leased by U.S. government agencies or those that are U.S. owned.
